Above The Fold
Share
Have you ever heard the phrase 'Above the Fold'? More importantly, do you know what it means and why it matters when it comes to the world of websites and marketing?
No?
It's totally ok if you don't, that's what we are chatting about today!
The history of the term is pretty interesting. It heralds back (you will see a pun here shortly hahaha) to the golden era of the newspaper. When they were a true broadsheet. Due to their size to comfortably hold and read the newspaper you had to lieterally fold it in at least half. This meant that the most engaging headlines and the most important attention grabbing content had to be where people could see and read it above that fold. This is where the phrase stems from, pretty cool right?
As the world and technology has moved on away from the good old broadsheet newspaper and towards websites and online content effectively the fold line has become the bottom of the screen view.
This means that when we refer to 'Above the Fold' when it comes to your website and marketing we are referencing everything that appears as you land on the page and don't scroll. That is all that you have to be able to grab your customers attention, have them realise they are in the right place and take the next action.
Some general rules of thumb for above the fold content:
- Make is snappy
- Make it clear and super easy to understand
- Have a clear call to action
- Images used should be super clear on what you sell
- Test and retest!
Ultimately you only have about three seconds for someone to see your content and for their brain to register that yes I know exactly what you are selling or talking about, I know that I am in the right place and I know exactly what the next action you want me to take is.
Yep three seconds, that's it. And honestly if you really dig into your website bounce stats you may find that you have even less time than that to grab someones attention.
If you want to test if your content above the fold is on point ask someone that doesn't know what you sell to take a look for three seconds and see if they can tell you exactly what it is that you sell.
If you need help working out exactly what should be sitting above the fold on your site make sure you hit reply and ask me.
Until next time, stay magical,
